Elementary Physical Activity Program
Program will consist of physical activity Instruction focusing on the core elements of the FitnessGram
test: strength, flexibility, and aerobic capacity through fun sports and fitness activities. Instructors
will be qualified CSU/UC student interns and each school will have the ability to work with their intern
to customize the program to fit their schools needs.
There are 23 California State Universities throughout California. Virtually all universities have a
Kinesiology Dept., Nutrition, and Public Health Department, often in the same College
--Combined departments' student enrollment within each university, >1000 (CSUN has 1000 Kinesiology
students alone)
While not a replacement for full time credentialed PE teachers in every elementary school, we are in a
state of emergency and something must and can be done to fill the gap utilizing this resource of >20,000
undergraduate students who could assist LIAs, schools, and community agencies by sharing their knowledge
through no-cost internships.
Can there be no better use of our state resources then to make this a California driven effort? The
epidemic of obesity and related chronic illness like heart disease and subsequent mortality caused
by poor nutrition and physical inactivity will have astounding health care costs in the next generation.
WE ARE ALREADY IMPLEMENTING THIS SOLUTION.
At one time, we will lead the country, showing them how an affordable education system could work...
we will show the country again, how this same system helped California turn the tide on the healthcare
crisis that faces us. WE CAN LEAD THE WAY.
Evaluation
Program will be evaluated based on the improvement of State FitnessGram scores of participating schools
as well as comparing the scores of participating schools with those non-participating schools.
